Improve Your Oral Health with These 5 New Year’s Resolutions

Although it may be hard to believe, 2024 is almost here! If you’re planning on dedicating some time to creating new goals, don’t forget to think about ways you can prevent cavities, gum disease, and other common problems. Not sure where to start? Don’t worry – here are five simple oral health-related New Year’s resolutions.

1. Floss Each Morning or Evening

Recent research estimates that one in three Americans don’t floss at all. This may be due to the common misconception that brushing alone is enough, but, in reality, this oral hygiene step plays an essential role in cleaning between your teeth and preventing plaque buildup along your gumline. So, if you’re a part of the 33% that don’t floss or you don’t do so consistently, make 2024 the year that changes.

2. Brush Your Teeth After Lunch

You may brush your teeth in the morning and evening, but do you brush your teeth after lunch? If you don’t, the foods you eat will linger in your mouth and on your teeth for hours on end, increasing your risk of cavities. If you’re normally short on time, you can also chew on some sugar-free gum. Although it’s not the same as brushing, it can stimulate saliva production, removing food particles in the process.

3. Eat Nutrient-Dense Foods

At the beginning of the year, many patients focus on the things they want to remove from their diet, like ice cream. Instead, think of what you can add to your plate to benefit your oral health! Colorful fruits and vegetables are a great start because they are packed with the nutrients your body needs to effectively fight off infections.

4. Visit Your Dentist for a Checkup and Cleaning

Remember, even if you consistently brush and floss, you need to visit your dentist for a checkup and cleaning twice a year. These routine appointments are crucial because, without them, serious oral health concerns can develop undetected (i.e., oral cancer, tooth decay, gum disease). Furthermore, plaque and tartar can build up in the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth, and the tools your dental hygienist uses can prevent that from happening.

5. Rinse with an Antimicrobial Mouthwash

Brushing and flossing consistently is a great start. However, it’s possible for plaque, food particles, and other debris to hide in the nooks and crannies in your mouth. That’s why patients are encouraged to rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash for 30-60 seconds each evening.
